Meet Presidio Way Veterinary Hospital’s Veterinarians & Staff
All of our staff veterinarians are members of the American Veterinary Medicine Association and the California Veterinary Medicine Association.
Timothy Bloom, DVM
I have been enjoying the practice of veterinary medicine for 37 years and have been in my own business for 33 of those. I started my business in September 1977 by doing veterinary house calls in San Francisco. The beginning years were very interesting and many of those original clients are still friends and clients today. I’d love to write a book, much like the James Herriot novels, of those early days of my business. It has been a lot of work, but today I find the practice of veterinary medicine more enjoyable and fulfilling than at any time in my career.
My work is fun, challenging, and extremely interesting. There is something different and new every day and even the usual things we deal with are always new because each patient and client adds so much to our day. It gives us great joy to meet and play with all the new puppies and kittens that come into our office daily, as well as some of the geriatric patients who are still going strong at 22 years of age. Even the sad cases, when we must help a family say goodbye to their loved one, are close to my heart, for I remember how I felt with my own beloved cats, Tyke, Kao, and Kent, and my dear dog named Spooky.
I am a single gay man who, since I became the sole owner of Presidio Way Hospital in 2008, is married to the business I love so much. It takes many long hours but the rewards help keep me young. In my spare time I enjoy exercising, going to the gym, and mountain biking, since I have Mt. Tamalpais in my back yard. I love gourmet food and fine dining, as well as travel, and recently took a wonderful trip to Spain. Getting more adept on my Mac and the gadgets that help keep me organized, entertained, and connected with the world fascinates me. After adding up all the rewards of a job well done, life just cannot get any better.
Mike Moran, DVM (Dr. Mike)
I attended Cornell University as a pre-med student with an emphasis in neurobiology and behavior. I then moved to San Francisco to follow my dream of playing live music. With mega stardom just barely slipping through my fingers, and enjoying my work at the San Francisco SPCA, I enrolled at the University of California at Davis, receiving my DVM in 2002. I joined Presidio Way in 2003 and have been here ever since. I love practicing veterinary medicine and especially enjoy ultrasound and challenging internal medicine cases. I consider myself very lucky to be a part of the Presidio Way Veterinary Hospital team, because our clients and patients allow us to practice such high-quality medicine and this, in turn, helps make me a more skilled and compassionate doctor.
I live in San Francisco with my wife, who is also a vet, our two boys, and several furry creatures. In my time away from the hospital, I enjoy camping, fishing, cooking, and playing, listening to, and seeing live music.
Shanna Compton, DVM
When I get asked, "What made you decide to become a veterinarian?" I answer truthfully that I've wanted to be a vet ever since I was 5 years old, since I was raised surrounded by animals. Some of my friends joke that I was RAISED by animals, but that is beside the
point. I got my Bachelor's of Arts in Mathematics/Computer Science from Claremont McKenna College in 1986. I worked as a computer programmer for a few years before being accepted at U/C Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating with my DVM in 1996. Since then, I've worked exclusively with small animals, mainly cats and dogs. I
have practiced in several areas, including San Mateo, San Jose, Morgan Hill, Stockton as well as San Francisco.
I'm a California native who after a short spell of wandering returned to her roots in the Bay Area, even going so far as to buy my father's old house in Los Gatos, where I reside. It is a commute, but working at this hospital is definitely worth it! I have been extremely happy with the high quality of staff, clients and medicine that is available here, which is pushing me to learn more every day. My particular interests are dentistry and dermatology, but I also love routine surgeries as well. I am owned by two cats and have a miniature horse and chickens on my property in the mountains. In my spare time I am
an unabashed reader of Science Fiction/Fantasy, knit, and play table
top role-playing games.
Kristen Porter, Practice Manager
I began working in the veterinary field in 2005. After years in retail customer service, I found the veterinary field to be both engaging and rewarding. I came to San Francisco and Presidio Way by way of Eureka, California, in September 2007. The experience I have gained at Presidio Way has been invaluable. I have never worked with a group of people who give me so much joy every day. We have the most wonderful clients a clinic could ask for and the staff works so diligently to maintain the health and well-being of the pets we are so lucky to treat. I have two cats that came to me through Presidio Way. Franklin Delano and George Michael are both a constant reminder of how important the human–animal bond is.
Monica Forsythe, RVT Lead
I started working with animals while living in Seattle in 1995. I was introduced to the world of parrots when I was hand raising a Greenwing macaw and a Goffin's cockatoo. The love affair began and I have never looked back! After moving back to the Bay Area ,I worked in the bird show at Marine World for the summer of 1999. In 2000 I got my first veterinary job as a receptionist. Watching the nurses care for the animals and comfort them while they were in the hospital inspired me to beg for a shot "in the back". Luckily, the owner decided to take a chance on me. To this day I have appreciated every day I spend at a veterinary hospital. While I may be a "bird nerd" I still really love the amazing dogs and cats that I get the take care of everyday!
Julie Frechette, RVT
Ever since I can remember, I have loved being around animals. After graduating from high school, I adopted a stray cat and fell completely in love with him. This led me to want to help animals on another level. I enrolled in a veterinary technician program at Western Career College in San Leandro, where I earned my AS in veterinary technology. I began working at Presidio Way in 2005 and became a Registered Veterinary Technician in 2009.
Juliette Flores, RVT
I graduated from Western Career College in 2004 and was hired at Presidio Way Veterinary Hospital during my externship. In 2007, I passed the rigorous tests to become a Registered Veterinary Technician. Every year at Presidio Way just gets better. It is so rewarding to focus on our furry patients, making them and their care our top priority. At home, I have Fieldy, my lazy orange cat, and a new rambunctious addition to our family, Curly, another orange kitty.
Jessie Diaz, RVT
I graduated from Western Career College in 2007 and received my RVT license in 2008. I began working at Presidio Way in May 2009. Having worked in the veterinary field since 2006, I have realized that the core care of veterinary medicine is about giving pets a comfortable, healthy life.
Erin McGinnis, RVT
Although I was born in San Francisco, I grew up in the rolling hills of Marin County (with the Open Space literally in my backyard), and have a great appreciation of nature and animals. Because of this appreciation, I decided to pursue my dream career in veterinary medicine by studying Animal Biology at U.C. Davis. My career path took a slight fork after graduating in 2005 with a Bachelor's in Science-- I decided to go into veterinary nursing (a.k.a. Veterinary Technology) and passed the California Registered Veterinary Technician Exam in October, 2011. I joined the Presidio Way team in January, 2012, and I'm loving every minute! In my free time, I take tap dance lessons (a continuation of my childhood hobby) and I love to bake sweet creations.
Amanda Moorehead, Nurse Assistant/Inventory Management
I hail from Downers Grove, Illinois, where I got my start in veterinary medicine in 2002. I began working at Presidio Way in September 2007. As the servant of two rescued cats, I am an avid supporter of animal rescue groups and shelters. Kaspian is a 6-year-old black and white domestic medium hair. He is very sweet and loves to be around people. Squid Vicious was found as a 4-week-old kitten in Battery Park City, New York. She is now a 4-year-old medium hair that loves to attack everything that moves. In my spare time, I am pursuing my other passion as a locally performing singer/songwriter.
Jessica Saul, Nurse Assistant
I have a BA in psychology from the University of California at Santa Cruz, but my love for animals led me to work in the veterinary field since 2000. I am also an AmeriCorps member of VetSOS (Veterinary Street Outreach Services), providing veterinary care to the companion animals of the homeless in San Francisco. I have three strange cats and dream of having a dog one day. I began working at Presidio Way in June 2009, and I greatly enjoy it.
Lindsay Koeppan, Nurse Assistant
I grew up in San Mateo and moved to San Luis Obispo to attend college. I graduated from California Polytechnic State University with a BS in animal science. After graduation, I moved back to San Mateo and began working at Presidio Way in June 2010. In my free time, I enjoy running and baking delicious treats.
Roxanne Ramirez, Nurse Assistant
Compassion for animals has always been a huge part of my life. My
journey began in Texas where I started as a volunteer at a small
animal shelter fostering newborn animals and walking dogs. After
awhile I was hired to work directly with the veterinarian learning
animal medicine. After that, I knew helping animals would be the only
thing I would ever want to do! A strong desire for better
opportunities had me heading west to San Francisco where I am now a
full time student at San Francisco State pursuing a degree in
Environmental Sciences and Conservation. Things only got better as I
found an amazing opportunity with Presidio Way Veterinary Hospital
allowing me the chance to continue learning and helping animals.
Sophia Brown, Client Services
I am a second generation San Francisco native and have always had a love for our "best friends" from the animal world. After working in retail for 2 plus years and working a temporary job at a pet hospital, I knew I know longer wanted to work in cosmetic retail and wanted to do something I knew I’d find great joy in doing. I’ve been working with animals for a little over 7 years and I love it! I am new to Presidio Way as of February 2011 and I’m very happy that I have the opportunity to work with great people and share our love for animals. I am currently working as a CSR, but in the furture hope to pursue my dream of becoming a certified RVT. I have always wanted to play a bigger role in the lives of the pets we love.
Rebecca Rizzuto, Client Services
I started working in a veterinary hospital as a client liaison in 1999. Feeling an immediate connection to the work inspired me to learn as much as I could about veterinary medicine. Before long, I was a trained nursing assistant, although I could never entirely give up my role as a client service representative. I took a hiatus from the profession in 2005 to pursue an education and career in massage therapy. I joined the amazing team at Presidio Way in May 2010, where I am finding balance between my two areas of calling. I couldn’t be more thrilled to be back in this field. I have so much respect and adoration for our furry friends, and I feel honored to play a part in their wellness.
